What is FoxMillBirds.com?

FoxMillBirds.com seeks to update interested Fox Mill residents and other members of the birding community by crowdsourcing the time, date and place of bird species identified in the subdivision. The goal is to show a timely, running list (with photos when possible) of what's out there in our neighborhood. Ultimately, the data can also be used to tally seasonal reports.

Of absolute interest are rare or uncommon species for our area. But also of particular note are migrants (think Spring and Fall warblers, the first Winter junco, etc.), irruptive species or other unusual or just-plain neat sightings. Backyard or feeder birds beyond the usual suspects are also good sightings to report. Finally, anything captivating like groups of sandhill cranes yodling overhead, or large flocks of bluebirds or cedar waxwings is all fair game to report.

Fox Mill is a prime environment for birds — and birding — with more than 275 acres of open space, six ponds, 13 parks and 5.5 miles of paved trails to walk, hike or bike. Within the grounds, there is a mix of habitats including wetland, streamland, prairieland and grassland. Nearby, there is ample farmland and dense forestland, as well as several Kane County Forest Preserves.
